Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 14 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.
Kona and Puna officers arrested five drivers in each district while South Hilo officers arrested four, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala officers arrested one motorist.
So far this year, there have been 250 DUI arrests compared with 281 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 158 major accidents so far this year compared with 167 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, 10 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2021, six people had died.
